IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major and is close to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula lies more than four hundred times further away than that famous star. It is a roughly circular H II region centered on the Be star HD 53367.

It is a roughly circular H II region centered on the Be star HD 53367. This nebula was discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts and was described by him as "pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse." IC 2177 (the Seagull Nebula) is located along the line just above Sirius (about 5 degrees). The region is a treasure chest of planetary nebula and rich hydrogen clouds that reach almost to Sirius. IC 2177 is a large but faint emission nebula on the Monoceros/Canis Major border, about 7 degrees north-east of Sirius, and about 2 degrees south of the open cluster, M50, which is visible in the photograph as a bright, compact group of stars about the nebula. Astronomers catalog the nebula as IC 2177. This cosmic cloud is one of many sites of star formation within the Milky Way galaxy.
